Creative Is the New Performance Driver

TGBy Tushaar Garg, Founder & CEO, StreamO · 6 min read

For a decade, performance marketing was a targeting game. Find the right audience, bid on them efficiently and let the algorithm do the rest. Creative was something the brand team worried about.

That game is over. The platforms now do the targeting. What they can't do is make people care. In 2026, the creative is the strategy.

Creative was always the biggest lever

Nielsen's research found that creative drives 47% of the sales impact of advertising, more than reach (22%), brand (15%) or targeting (9%) (Inside Radio, citing Nielsen and NCSolutions). Marketers have long believed the opposite.

The platforms have made it official

Meta's ad system now uses AI to decide who sees which ad, and Meta itself has said the focus has shifted "from niche targeting to creative diversification as the best lever" (Jon Loomer, quoting Meta). In other words, the creative is now the targeting: different concepts find different audiences on their own.

The attention problem

Better creative matters even more when the audience is actively avoiding ads. Half of Indian consumers use ad blockers, and the youngest skip whatever they can. Creative that looks like an ad is filtered out, by software or by thumbs.

The creative that survives is creative people choose to watch. That means three things:

  • Native: built for the format and the culture, not resized from a TV film.

  • Participatory: something the audience can react to, vote on, play or win.

  • Creator-carried: delivered by someone the audience already trusts.

The creative that survives is creative people choose to watch.

What it looks like in livestreams

In a livestream, creative is the difference between a logo in the corner and a moment the chat remembers. Some of StreamO's best results came from ideas, not budgets:

  • Chupa Chups made its brand the talk of the stream with a contest activation, reaching a 3.2% CTR across 140 creators.

  • Kwality Wall's tied an ice-cream launch to the heat of gameplay, reaching a 2% CTR.

  • McDonald's turned Minecraft into its playground for the Minecraft Movie Meal, reaching a 2.55% CTR.

For comparison, Google Display Network ads average around 0.46% (StoreGrowers).

How to make creative perform

  1. Start from the culture. What is your audience already watching, playing and joking about?

  2. Make many, not one. Several distinct concepts beat one polished film.

  3. Build for participation. Give people something to do, not just something to see.

  4. Let creators adapt it. A good framework travels across creators; it doesn't need rewriting for each.

  5. Measure attention, not just clicks. Watch time and chat response tell you whether the creative earned its place.

The algorithm will find your audience. Your creative has to give them a reason to stay.
