Breaking Down the Numbers: How Big Is Gaming on YouTube, Really?
Gaming numbers get thrown around a lot: millions of daily viewers, billions of hours, "second only to music". Each one measures something different. Put together properly, they tell a clear story about where young attention lives. Here is what each one means.
120 billion hours: gaming video on YouTube
In 2022, people around the world watched more than 120 billion hours of gaming content on YouTube, across more than 2 trillion views (YouTube).
That number covers everything: let's-plays, walkthroughs, reviews, Shorts, highlights and streams. It's the size of gaming as a video genre.
Gaming, second only to music
Gaming is the second-biggest content genre on YouTube after music. Music is what people put on; gaming is what they sit down and watch.
8.8 billion hours: live gaming on YouTube
Live is a subset of the 120 billion, and the fastest-growing one. In 2025, YouTube Gaming recorded a record 8.8 billion hours of live viewing, up 12% on 2024. That's a quarter of all gaming livestream hours worldwide: for every four hours of live gaming watched anywhere, at least one is on YouTube (Tubefilter).
194 million hours: India's share
India was the third-largest country for YouTube Gaming watch time in 2025, at 194 million hours across the top 1,000 creators, behind only Japan and the United States (Tubefilter).
Remember what that figure measures: only the top 1,000 creators, and only live hours. The long tail of India's gaming creators, the thousands of mid-size and small streamers, sits on top of it.
One in five of the world's daily gaming viewers is Indian.
500 million and 100 million: the daily audience
StreamO estimates that around 500 million people worldwide watch video-game content on YouTube every day, and around 100 million of them are in India. One in five of the world's daily gaming viewers is Indian.
Music is what people put on; gaming is what they sit down and watch.
555 million: the players behind the watchers
India has 555 million gamers, after the real-money gaming ban reduced the count by 9% (Lumikai, State of India Interactive Media Report 2025). Not every gamer watches, and not every watcher plays. But the overlap is the audience brands want: young, mobile-first and online for hours every day.
What the numbers add up to
| Number | What it measures | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| 120B hours | All gaming video watched on YouTube | Global, 2022 |
| 8.8B hours | Live gaming watched on YouTube | Global, 2025 |
| 194M hours | Live gaming watched on top 1,000 Indian channels | India, 2025 |
| 500M | Daily gaming viewers on YouTube | Global, StreamO estimate |
| 100M | Daily gaming viewers on YouTube | India, StreamO estimate |
| 555M | Gamers | India, 2025 |
Read together: gaming is one of the biggest things people do on YouTube, live gaming is growing fastest within it, and India is one of its three biggest markets. Yet gaming still sits in a 3 to 5% test budget on most Indian media plans.
